What Is the Best Job You Ever Had? Was It A Peak Experience?

I consider my very best job a Peak Experience. It was so satisfying, that I work to re-create it in every job I’ve held since then, but just as the planets don’t always align, those subsequent jobs didn’t always align. I asked myself “What were the details that made that one job a Peak Experience?” These are my insights:

  • I felt a deep satisfaction going to work every day.
  • I knew I was contributing to something bigger than my department.
  • I could see my team was growing larger in their roles due to stretching.
  • Our students (we were a training department) were learning to become productive sales reps
  • Our students actually became excellent sales reps.
  • The staffing to accomplish the company’s growth flowed smoothly in the US, in Canada, and in England.
  • My boss appreciated me, my skills and my talents, and he rewarded them with bonuses.
  • During my six years in that job, the company’s annual sales went from $972 million to $6.7 billion.
  • I insured that the sales department knew about every other department’s contribution to allowing sales to happen without any glitches.
  • I helped every team member achieve their annual goals and get good raises.
  • As I worked to support every other department’s needs, they worked to support ours.
  • My creativity was aggrandized as my Sales Training Manual was translated into other languages as needed.

A peak experience is a moment accompanied by a euphoric mental state often achieved by self-actualizing individuals, but are not isolated to only that group. My heart used to thrill when the CEO would explain our company’s successes each month compared to our competitors. I loved being on the management team and it was the winning team.  I love winning. I loved that every one of my trainers achieved every goal he or she set for themselves that year.

peak experienceWhat would it take for you to turn your entrepreneurial company into a Peak Experience for you and for your associates?  If you said to your staff “I’d like each one of you to fly as high and as wide in your jobs this month, and know  that the company  will support you in that,” what results might appear? Some ideas:

  • They’d love to come to work simply for the joy of individual and corporate achievement.
  • Their hearts and minds would be fully committed, and the promise of a raise felt real.
  • They lose track of time because of the joy of doing.
  • They’d love learning other jobs around them for the value of the team.
  • Moments of awe, wonder, and amazement would happen to them.
  • Corporate (your) goals would be achieved or exceeded.
  • Your business would soar.
  • Your clients will feel the associates’ joy and spread the word.
  • Success for all would be the underlying expectation.

It’s the beginning of Fall. What if you crafted an experiment for one month in this last quarter to test the  waters? What if your test was so successful, you’d have to craft an even bigger plan (with their input, of course) for 2019? What if Peak Experiences became the norm? Could you and your team handle total buy in?
