What I Have Learned…About Buying Stuff

what i've learned

My folks were tight fisted when it came to spending money, so I heard “no” a lot during my growing up years. Some kids pitch fits when they don’t get what they want. My parents would not tolerate this behavior, and my disappointment, my angst, and my unfulfilled desires got carried around hopelessly and silently within.

To frost that ugly cake, I entered the convent where I took a vow of poverty. How about them apples? There, I learned that having things isn’t necessary. They’re nice, but aren’t necessary. In community living, everything belonged to “us.” It wasn’t “my” pen; it was “our” pen. That did help to dissipate the sense of possessiveness.

At age 26, I re-entered the real world carrying all my ideas about having and owning things with me plus some newly acquired concepts.

Please meet Annie, a twenty five year old gal who’d just gotten her first corporate job, her first apartment, and upgraded her first car to a newer, sportier model. She’d worked various jobs through college to supplement her scholarship because her parents couldn’t help her any more than they were.

Annie loved fine clothing, but her entry-level salary didn’t stretch that far. She’d search on-line for bargains, but labels were most important to her, and she never felt that she measured up based on her skinny (although “well-labeled”) wardrobe.

After Performance Evaluations were completed, Annie got a small raise, but not enough to indulge her big-budget clothing desires. Her temperament soured over this issue and before long, she became embittered and just a touch snappy.

Similar to the moral in Aesop’s Fox and the Grapes fable, Annie had developed a cover for her lack, and she began to belittle designer clothing that was beyond her reach. Annie didn’t know about mental methods!

Owning stuff never helped me achieve any goals. Owning stuff was a burden to move. The stuff you own provides a basis for comparison and judgment both for myself and those in my life. I’m repulsed by this kind of judgment.

I am not a minimalist. I enjoy a comfortable home and a reliable car. I’m not a clothes or shoe horse because I know that those are the empty trappings of someone who isn’t enough for themselves. I am enough for myself.

I am a manifester. It boggles folk’s minds when what I desire seems to automatically show up. I like to think of it as “somehow; someway” but I actually know the laws of the Universe govern this. In our world today where very good items seem to be casually cast off with flippant disregard, I have become a bargain shopper. Yard sales are my main venue-of-choice, and when my yard sale buddies meet for breakfast, each of us states what we’re shopping for. I ask each homeowner for the things I want, because in many cases, they do have it in the house and haven’t put it out in their yard sale. I’ve gotten so many good things this way, and at unmentionably fabulous bargains.

I would like to say though, that if you’ve got the funds to buy everything brand new, the following laws also work. You’ll find things on sale or some other such bargain.

Why do these laws this work for me? Because I have learned that this is a mental universe. What most people call physical, I see as spiritual, or mental. While so-called physical things have to be worked on “with the hands,” mental things can be changed using my mind alone. Mental things can be created by using my mind alone. Mental things can be magnetized and drawn to me by using my mind. It’s 100% cost free to use this method. No guru to pay. You are the guru.

You can do this, too, and it’s a four-part lesson:

  1. Desire. This is the easiest part. I want something. I know you can do this.
  2. Conviction. This is an unshakeable feeling that what I want does exist and it’s on its way to me. A teacher told me if I was supposed to meet a man who lived in Borneo, he was currently hacking his way out of the jungle with a machete to me.
  3. Repetition. The mind can’t hold an idea for very long, so when I really want something, I think about it a lot.
  4. Expectation. I know the law which says All that is, already is. Knowing this, I expect it to show up in my experience like that guy from Borneo. (I didn’t want him, so he never showed up btw).

Application – wisdom, the principal thing; using what you know – is different than gathering up knowledge or information. The gathering is mere intellectuality. You just did that gathering by reading the article. Application means taking these ideas and making their truth your own consciously through using them so that the levels of health, wealth, success, harmony and happiness each move up on the scale of being in your experience. This is Intelligence. Intelligence would be you, using these ideas.

My first metaphysics teacher was driving home down the freeway when he saw a truck in front of him. In the bed of the truck was a drill press. He thought to himself “Boy, I’d love to have me a drill press.” When he arrived home, a friend of his was sitting in the driveway with a drill press in his truck for my teacher. That’s the mental way it’s supposed to happen.

If I was new to the idea of life being mental, new to the idea that I could use my mind to create, to attract, to manifest the stuff I want, I would do lots of experimenting with it. The first attempts will appear to be coincidental, or if your feeling was aligned perfectly, they’d seem unbelievably miraculous.

Here’s an addendum to my article that just happened. I switched purses this week, and the purse I switched to has a flap over it making access to the insides difficult. I thought to myself “I’d like to find a better purse that is easier to access than this.” Today on Facebook, a lady posted three business purses for sale. I wrote her asking for the burgundy one’s price. She said “They’re FREE.”  One was already gone, but the color I want remains. I am leaving in a few hours to go pick up the other two for free. I can’t wait to see if it’s the black or brown one. A girl can’t have too many purses. That’s how it is supposed to work, folks!

Next month, the topic will be about Others. I am looking forward to writing it for you.

I’ve retired from my copywriting business. I’m still teaching metaphysics. If you would like to know what is behind the way I think, pat.matson@gmail.com is the best way to reach me. I want to make hundreds more new friends and share what I’ve learned before it’s time to go toes up. BTW, I’ve always thought living to be 126 was a great idea. I’m working on it.
