What Would It Take to Fully Know Yourself?

know yourself

know thyselfOn the Temple of Delphi there are 147 maxims carved. Probably one of the well-remembered ones is “Know thyself.”  Socrates added his two cents in when he said “To know thyself is the beginning of wisdom.”

What would it take to fully know your Self? What would you have to do to begin such a process or to extend one if you’ve already begun? I think we could all agree that such a journey would be toward self-awareness as a net result.

Do you know that your emotions all show up on your face as you feel them? Did you know every pound of fat you carry requires seven miles of blood vessels? Are you aware you’re taller in the morning vs. the evening? Did you know your bones are as strong as granite? You will have shed 40 pounds of skin in your lifetime. You could only see black and white when you were born.

If you truly want to experience success, self-discovery is essential. You’ll need to understand how your personality was formed courtesy of your parents, your family, your teachers, your classmates, and your church. One of the best ways to figure out “what happened” as you were growing up is to write about it. You don’t have to publish what you write unless you want to, but the process of writing things down allows you to re-think the events as you write. You’ll add a more adult perspective than when you lived the experience and it will help you understand yourself more.

What people, which events formed you into the “you” of today? Did you become a leader (or a follower) early on? How do you relate stories of your highs and lows?

Time to think about your Self daily is essential to self knowledge. There are many questions you might ask: Why do I hesitate to do for another what I find easy to do for myself? How old was I when I determined this was the way to go? You can keep a journal, go for a stroll, or have a physical workout – anything to stimulate self-thought and thus more awareness.

How do you handle feedback? “Thank you.” “Who do you think you are?” or “Shut up!

No one should give you feedback without your consent – ever – and you might need to tell them they are NOT invited to share. But when you need feedback, invite someone you trust who will tell you all the truth, and then listen with both ears open.

Socrates also said “The unexamined life is not worth living.” It is introspection that will get you inside (where the Kingdom of Heaven is purported to be) and once within, there are grand discoveries you can make that will allow you to feel strong in your business offerings, wise in your coaching directions, and satisfied that you’re on the right path and doing the right things.

We entrepreneurs often think that it is the next great software app, hiring the talented marketer, or being gloriously branded in our businesses that make us successful. I am offering the idea that who we are as we step into this arena is just as important and has just as long a reach as business tools. You do remember that once you learn something new about yourself each day you can go back to bed, right?
